Prepare for enrollment

Before picking your plan, make sure you have what you need. Confirm your enrollment eligibility and mark your calendar with deadlines.

You are a US citizen or permanent legal resident for at least five years plus one of the following:

  • You are age 65 or older
  • You have received Social Security disability for at least two years
  • You have Lou Gehrig’s disease or permanent kidney failure

When can you enroll or change your plan?

The enrollment window depends on a few things. Use the information below to decide when you can enroll.

Please note: During the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31, you can:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan from your current one

  • Disenroll from your current Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare Parts A&B

If you’re new to Medicare

Whether you’re turning 65 or are new to Medicare, we have the answers to your enrollment timing questions.

You are turning 65

Those who are about to turn 65, or just turned 65, are eligible for the Initial Enrollment Period.

An infographic shows when you can enroll in Medicare.

When can I enroll?

You will become eligible for Medicare the month of your 65th birthday. Your seven-month initial enrollment window starts three months before your 65th birthday and continues through the three months after. This is when you can enroll in Original Medicare Part A and Part B, as well as a Medicare Advantage plan with a private insurance company.

What do I need to do?

If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, then you most likely are already enrolled in Original Medicare Parts A&B. You should get your Original Medicare card and details in the mail three months before your birth month. If you get Social Security payments, you can choose to have your part B premium paid from your payment once your coverage starts. If you choose, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan through a private insurance company. You will be able to pick a plan any time within your seven-month initial enrollment window.

When will my Medicare coverage start?

If you sign up during the first three months of your initial enrollment period, your coverage starts the first day of the month you turn 65. If you sign up the month of your birthday, or within the three months after it, your coverage will begin the next month.

If you’re switching to a new plan

If you already have a Medicare plan, you can switch each year from October 15 to December 7.

An infographic shows the Annual Enrollment period between October 15 and December 7.

When can I enroll?

The Medicare Advantage Annual Enrollment Period is Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year. Anyone with Original Medicare can enroll in a Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug plan for the first time. You can also switch Medicare Advantage plans during this period or drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.

What do I need to do to enroll in Medicare Advantage?

You can shop, compare, and apply for Medicare Advantage coverage online or by calling a licensed sales agent. You can do this with the insurance company you want to enroll with directly or with another Medicare Advantage sales site.

When will my Medicare Advantage coverage start?

Your new plan will start on Jan 1 of the new year.

Congrats! You’ve learned how to prepare to enroll!
